Like previous generations, the Porsche 911 GT3 RS 992 is designed with one purpose in mind: to achieve the shortest lap times within the limits of a commercial vehicle.
Having become a tradition, each new generation of 911 GT3 launches always leads to a race-oriented RS variant afterwards. Therefore, after the launch of the GT3 992 generation, all car lovers know that a new Porsche 911 GT3 RS will soon appear. And even they soon learned of the most important performance changes when the GT3 RS prototype was tested a year ago. But until now, Porsche is ready to launch this “street racing car”.
The Porsche 911 GT3 RS 992 was designed with one goal in mind to achieve the shortest lap times within the limits of a commercial vehicle that can be “out at sea” and legally available anywhere in the world. And to achieve this goal, top speed on a straight line or engine power are not the most essential factors.
That’s why the 992 GT3 RS’s naturally aspirated horizontal six-cylinder engine is only 15PS more powerful than the regular GT3, reaching 525PS thanks to a new camshaft and racing-style single-throat intake system. Unlike the regular GT3, the driver will no longer have the right to manually cut the gearshift clutch because the 6-speed manual option has been removed. Because even the most experienced drivers can hardly change gears as quickly as the computer controls the 7-speed PDK transmission on the GT3 RS.
With 15PS and PDK, the car accelerates from 0-100km / h in just 3.4 seconds, 0.2 seconds faster than the GT3. However, in return, the top speed was cut from 319km/h to just 296km/h due to new aerodynamic details that made the body more wind resistant. In return, the new aerodynamic package makes the GT3 RS stable at high speeds as if the train were running on rails – it’s very difficult to derail.
These include the L-shaped fins on the bonnet that draw from the air intakes in the front bumper, the 2 shark gills above the wheel arches that are now characteristic of the GT3 RS, and the air fins on both sides. front and rear wheel arches. And that’s just the beginning – everything is done more by Porsche from the roof with the rear spoiler.
The large diffuser located under the rear bumper has become a common standard of supercar models, of course, it cannot be absent on the 911 GT3 RS. But next to them, there are now fins in the two rear bumper corners. Especially at the top of the hood is a large tailgate that has never been seen on any civilian Porsche, with a gooseneck reverse suspension pad like a racing car. The edge of this tail wing is electrically adjustable thanks to two hydraulic levers to increase or decrease aerodynamic pressure depending on operating conditions.
All the above aerodynamic details help create up to 409kg of air compression at a speed of 200km / h. This number alone is twice as large as the 911 GT3 RS of the previous 991 generation, and three times more than the current 992 GT3. But that is just the beginning because when reaching 285km / h, the air pressure generated will be up to 860kg.
But air compression is only one part of the problem to minimize the time to complete each lap – the rest is to make sure the four wheels stick to the road and reduce weight to make the car more agile. To withstand the huge compression, the suspension has also been adjusted. Meanwhile, new rims with a diameter of 20 inches at the front and 21 inches at the rear come with new Michelin tires. The front tire width has increased from 255 to 275mm, while the rear has increased from 315 to 335mm.
However, despite trying very hard to use carbon fiber for many details such as doors, front fenders, seat frames …, this time due to too many new aerodynamic details, the GT3 RS is not only heavier than 991.2 GT3 RS old 20kg, but also 15kg more low-end brother GT3 992. But customers will have the opportunity to reduce that number if they buy the Weissach package, which allows Porsche to replace the entire roof, bonnet, and reinforced frame in the cabin with carbon fiber. For more money, a set of magnesium wheels like a racing car will be installed on the GT3 RS.
The final detail related to the performance of the new generation 911 GT3 RS is the braking system. Since leaving the factory, the car has been equipped with 6 pistons for each front wheel and 4 pistons for the rear wheel to press steel discs. Brakes with large-diameter carbon-ceramic discs are optional, while the Clubsport package will be offered free of charge by Porsche. This package adds a reinforced steel frame, a 6-point seat belt, and a hand-held fire extinguisher.
Without the Clubsport package, the interior of the 911 GT3 RS also has a number of differences such as the logos located on the headrests and door sills, dual straps instead of the interior door handles, carbon fiber trim and some menu for high-performance running in the infotainment system. And despite using a PDK transmission, this is the only 911 version that still has a gearshift lever instead of just using the paddles behind the steering wheel.
