Belgium Euro 2024 Squad: 25 Players Coach Domenico Tedesco Took to Germany

The Three Lions have a world-class squad and there is no reason why they shouldn’t win the Euro – but who will make the cut? England typically enters tournaments with high expectations and confidence, and this time the hype is warranted. The Three Lions are heading to Germany with one goal in mind: bringing the trophy home.

Gareth Southgate’s team was just a few penalties away from ending 55 years of pain at the recent European Championship, but since their heartbreaking loss to Italy at Wembley, they have only grown stronger. They shone at the 2022 World Cup, being eliminated by France with a score difference and have become accustomed to deep runs in tournaments, something previously unthinkable.

Harry Kane is even more prolific after breaking all scoring records in Germany with Bayern Munich, while Jude Bellingham has won over the world’s toughest fans and become Real Madrid’s most important player.

Meanwhile, England’s Manchester City team is accustomed to lifting a cup every few months, Bukayo Saka has become Arsenal’s talisman and fringe players like Ollie Watkins are having impressive seasons.

With such an embarrassment of riches at his disposal, Southgate has no reason why his team shouldn’t go all the way this summer. But who made it into the England squad for Euro 2024? Coach Southgate announced the final 26-man roster on June 6…

Goalkeepers

Southgate has been quite consistent in his goalkeeper selection, sticking with the trio of Jordan Pickford, Aaron Ramsdale, and Sam Johnstone since June 2023. However, Johnstone will miss the tournament after suffering a wrist injury in March, and his spot has gone to club-mate Dean Henderson.

Pickford has been the undisputed number 1 since Southgate first took over in 2016, and that is unlikely to change now. He continues to perform excellently for Everton, keeping the second highest number of clean sheets in the Premier League despite the Toffees’ struggles.

Defenders

England’s backline has also been fairly consistent under Southgate, but injury issues have given the manager a headache going into the tournament. Harry Maguire confirmed that the leg injury that cut short his season with Manchester United will not have healed in time for him to play, while Luke Shaw – who has not played since February – is also yet to prove his fitness.

Maguire’s absence opens up the possibility of Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi partnering with John Stones in Germany, while Kieran Trippier could be forced into left-back if Shaw is not ready to start in England’s tournament opener against Serbia on June 16.

Midfielders

The midfield is an area of intrigue for England, as they have two of the world’s best players in Declan Rice and Bellingham, and many questions about who will play alongside them.

Conor Gallagher is the in-form midfielder outside of Rice and Bellingham, but Trent Alexander-Arnold is also an option after Southgate moved him into midfield in late 2023. Meanwhile, Manchester United youngster Kobbie Mainoo impressed against Brazil and Belgium in March, and is certainly being discussed when it comes to potential new starters.

Southgate also picked Adam Wharton, who has rapidly risen through the ranks since joining Crystal Palace from Blackburn Rovers in January.

Forwards

Southgate could hardly ask for a better pool of forwards to choose from, and there is evidence to suggest that England has the world’s highest quality attacking players.

As well as Kane, who scored 44 goals in his first season at Bayern, Watkins is in fine form and he received the Premier League Player of the Season award for being the tournament’s top assist provider this season along with his 19 goals.

There is also no shortage of top-quality wingers, with Anthony Gordon and Cole Palmer recently joining the competition to supplement the experienced but still young Saka and Phil Foden.

Southgate is famously steadfast and restrained in experimenting, especially in major tournaments. Even fair-weather England fans with only a basic knowledge of the team could probably guess who he will choose in Germany and know a lot about that team.

The main position of interest is left-back, where Shaw (if fit) will compete with Trippier, and at center-back alongside Stones, with Guehi thought to be leading the way.

The remaining unknown is how the six forwards will line up and who will join Rice, Bellingham, Kane, Saka, and Foden in the starting lineup. Alexander-Arnold, Palmer, Mainoo, and Gallagher are currently leading the way, but much will depend on how bold Southgate is from the start.

EURO 2024 will take place in Germany from June 14 to July 14, 2024 in 10 cities in Germany with 24 participating teams. The teams are divided into 6 groups to select the first and second teams in each group, and the 4 third-placed teams with the best performance to get a ticket to the knock-out round. The opening match is scheduled for June 14 between host Germany and Scotland.
