Van Dijk: The Netherlands achieving a 0-0 draw and securing a precious point against France is a great reward in Group D of Euro 2024.

Team captain Virgil van Dijk believes the Netherlands was denied a valid goal, but is pleased with the 0-0 draw against France in the second round of Group E at Euro 2024.

Van Dijk: The Netherlands achieving a 0-0 draw and securing a precious point against France is a great reward in Group D of Euro 2024.

“I’m pleased with one point, but Xavi Simons’ goal should have been counted,” Van Dijk said after the match. “A point is a great reward, we have to be realistic. We were playing against France so it’s not surprising that we had some difficult phases during the match.”

Van Dijk mentioned the situation where Xavi Simons volleyed the net against France in the 69th minute. However, the goal was not counted after the side referee flagged Denzel Dumfries offside. After three minutes of consulting VAR, referee Anthony Taylor maintained the decision, arguing that the Dutch defender had obstructed the French goalkeeper’s field of operation.

Van Dijk views the team’s fighting spirit as a positive and is pleased that the team is leading Group D with four points from two games. According to the 32-year-old centre-back, the Netherlands tried to maintain a solid defense, not leave any gaps and hurt France in counterattacks, but overall did not perform perfectly.

Similarly, Xavi Simons accepts the referee’s decision to deny the goal and is pleased that the Netherlands fought until the end. The 21-year-old midfielder didn’t want to say much about the controversial situation to focus on the goal of defeating Austria in the final round on June 25th.

On the pitch in Leipzig on June 21st, France had 63% ball possession, shot 15 times – nearly double the Netherlands (8), but had fewer on-target shots (three versus four). In addition to the situation where Simons was denied a goal, the Netherlands had many other clear chances, such as when Jeremie Frimpong’s cross-shot was blocked by Maignan in the very first minute, as well as shots from Memphis Depay and Cody Gakpo.

According to coach Ronald Koeman, the Netherlands started well, as demonstrated by Frimpong’s opportunity after about 40 seconds. The 61-year-old coach admitted that the Netherlands did not control the ball well, often lost control in an undeserved way, but defended solidly. He noticed that the Netherlands could not gain an advantage towards the end of the match, so shifted focus to securing a point.

On the Dutch National Television NOS, two legends Pierre van Hooijdonk and Rafael van der Vaart criticized both the Netherlands and France for using conservative tactics. They both wanted the Netherlands to show a more attractive style of play, and give opportunities to Joshua Zirkzee or Donyell Malen – players who are in high form at the club level, but did not play a single minute against France.
