Portugal came from behind to beat the Czech Republic 2-1 in the 92nd minute in their opening match of Group F at Euro 2024.

After the final whistle, Ronaldo raised his hands to the sky, shouted loudly, and then went to hug 22-year-old midfielder Francisco Conceicao, who scored the decisive goal in the 92nd minute. In his first official match for Portugal, Conceicao scored a decisive goal just two minutes after coming on, bringing a hard-fought victory for the 2016 champions. Meanwhile, the 39-year-old superstar played the full 90 minutes, took five shots, but failed to score.

Portugal came from behind to beat the Czech Republic 2-1 in the 92nd minute in their opening match of Group F at Euro 2024.

Ronaldo set a record for playing in six Euros in this match and played energetically, but the people who contributed most to Portugal’s victory were coach Roberto Martinez, Conceicao, and… the goalkeeper and defenders of the opposition.

In the 90th minute, Coach Martinez brought on defender Nelson Semedo, midfielder Conceicao, and forward Pedro Neto. On BBC, commentator Danny Murphy thought this substitution was too late. “With only four minutes left on the clock, what can these three players do?”, the former England midfielder said.

However, all three of these players contributed to the decisive goal. Semedo blocked David Doudera off the ball to stop the opponent’s attack, helping Portugal counter-attack. Neto dribbled past someone on the left, then crossed the ball, causing the Czech defender to miss, leaving Conceicao to tap in at the near corner to secure the victory.

Francisco Conceicao, the son of former Porto coach Sergio Conceicao, was once questioned about his abilities when he was called up to the national team. He is only 1.7 meters tall, has technical skills, and is therefore nicknamed “Porto’s Messi”. However, the 22-year-old midfielder probably owes a “gift” to the Czech defense. The heavy rain made the field slippery, causing three Czech players to slip in the situation that led to Portugal’s goal.

The most regrettable in the Czech’s second goal conceded was center-back Robin Hranac, when he misjudged the ball, “setting the table” for Conceicao. The unexpected situation also caused goalkeeper Jindrich Stanek to slip, not being able to dive out to catch the ball. In the first goal conceded, from a not-too-difficult header from defender Nuno Mendes, Stanek punched the ball onto Hranac’s leg and it bounced back into his own net.

The Czechs “shot themselves in the foot”, even though they previously opened the score with a masterpiece in the 62nd minute. Receiving a pass from defender Vladimir Coufal, midfielder Lukas Provod shot from about 25 meters out, sending the ball spinning into the far corner, hitting the inside of the post and going in. Seeing his teammates disappointed, captain Ronaldo immediately encouraged his teammates not to give up, to rise and seek an equalizer.

The 39-year-old superstar was unlucky in this match, even though his touch of the ball was not bad, with a 100% passing rate. He had the best opportunity in the first half, from Bruno Fernandes’ through ball, but CR7’s one-touch left-footed shot from less than 10 meters out was saved by goalkeeper Stanek at close range.

A few minutes later, Ronaldo improvised a back heel for Vitinha to run into the box, but the 24-year-old midfielder’s shot was blocked by a defender. Towards the end of the first half, the 39-year-old striker had another chance when he received the ball on the right of the box, turned to his left foot and curled it to the far corner but still couldn’t beat Stanek. Besides the two goals conceded, the Czech goalkeeper also had a good game with seven saves, including a free kick from Ronaldo from 24 meters in the second half.

After the match, the entire Portugal team went to thank the fans, while Ronaldo nodded several times to show his determination. They had a difficult start against an opponent ranked 30 places lower in the FIFA rankings, but dominated the match. The Czechs only had one shot on target and scored. Meanwhile, Roberto Martinez’s troops held the ball for 74% of the time, took 19 shots, but were just unlucky.

Ronaldo and his teammates will have to improve their finishing if they want to keep winning against Turkey in the next match on June 22 in Dortmund at 23:00. Because not every time Portugal will receive two gifts as the Czechs did in Leipzig.
